Another Birthday.... Minion Style

By special request, here is the painted over version of a Minion I drew for my niece.
Sketched it and painted in Photoshop.

Dinumsaurs Part 2

Ok, my initial concept for my nephew's birthday piece involved sculpting some dinosaurs, and then rendering them in Maya to get a cleaner image.  Although the final product was acceptable, it began to bother me.  Not following through with pieces is not a usual occurrence for me.  But if I do so happen to stop working at a project, it is usually because I did a rush job in the beginning, and back tracking would not be worth my time.  So, in any case, I made sure the models were sculpted properly, with clean UVs and flawless geometry.  So if I were to back track and revisit this project, It wouldn't be too time consuming.
I love Maya, for all it can do and all it has taught me, but the rendering portion is very time consuming.  Being a 2D illustrator, I enjoy speed when working digitally.  So I did a little research on alternate 3D Modeling software, and stumbled upon Modo.  I downloaded the trial version, ripped through the basic tutorials, and voila!
The lighting is a bit blown out, and some of the cast shadows are weird, but I like it.  So I'm done.

I just finished this piece yesterday.  Made it for my nephew's birthday present.  I think he liked it... As much as any three year old could.  He really loves those dinosaurs.

Here's the original sketch concept.

Inside The Mind of...

Hello again! I hate these long breaks between projects. Work takes soooo much out of me, yet the creative juices are boiling over in my brain.  Haven't seriously worked the cintiq in about a month, other than some chicken scratch.  But in an effort to keep the blog roll spinning, here is a collage of a couple of older pieces.  It captures the essence of the characters, if you know the whole story... ;)
I know that I need to do this book, but I keep talking myself out of it.....

Staying On The Ball

Just a figure study I finished today.  Spent about 5 hours...
Keeping the momentum going.

Push Btn

Pushing "Resistance" to the side and moving forward, whether it sucks or not.
Recently got a shot of inspiration from the book, The War Of Art, by Steven Pressfield.
I recommend it to anyone who procrastinates any endeavor.

Rather than move on to something new... I decided to explore new layer types, to obtain a new look, and add some vibrance to my workflow.  The Linear Dodge and Pin Line layers seem to make some cool effects, when your goal is to blow out a specific portion of an image.

Panthro Complete!

Finally took the time to finish this bad boy.  Although I'm not happy with the background, I'm motivated to move on to something new.  I'll plan it out better, next time!

Panthro WIP Day 3

Just an update on the Panthro painting I was working on.  Nothing special.
I love how Instagram adds the cool filter, so I don't have to waste more time in Photoshop.

Panthro Progress

Steadily getting back into the painting and drawing groove.  Worked on this old sketch of Panthro today.  Working with some new techniques in Photoshop.  Added depth with some gradient overlays and some multiply layers for Ambient Occlusion and shadowing.
My brain is so weird at interpreting my sketches.  I have no idea how I extract the lines or the lighting scheme that I do.... So don't ask how I did it.

ZKB Redux

I was going through some of my old sketches, and stumbled upon a concept piece I sketched. I had colored it originally in Photoshop, but felt it deserved better.... So here it is! Forget about the old one! This one is hyper saturated and has a nicer lighting scheme. This time I painted it in Painter, and finished it off in Photoshop. Included the WIP, because it looked cool on my desktop.

Another One From The Old School

This is Red. I sketched this one years ago, and started playing around with PS effects and vector coloring. It looks ok, but never turned out to be anything more than a sketch... Oh well. Enjoy!

Old School Sketch

Here's something I forgot to post to my blog. Back from '09. I've always liked this one for some reason. It was featured in an online magazine a few years back... Don't remember which one. I believe it was related to the Schoolism crew, or something along those lines.

I can't believe how much I missed working with pencil, ink and watercolors! It feels so real! My fingers feel like they've got a work out! Not really. I started this sketch last night at work, and finished it this morning. It was meant as a gift to my friend who is possibly more of a Futurama fan than I am...Not bloody likely!

Still gettin' back into the groove of things it seems. It's funny how much you let go of when you stop painting for a long time. Finished this Zombified Smurf Head this morning. I like Zombies.

Friday, August 31, 2012

Had to touch base with the good o'l birds this morning. I had an idea that got the sidebar because of this little bastard! It was quick and easy, like me. Enjoy!

A quick concept exploration piece for a top secret project.....

Study Buddy

A fundamental experiment. Whist getting back into my groove, I've stumbled upon an alternative study experiment inspired by fellow artist Paul Richards. Love his gesture life drawings!
It's fun because it forces you to work fast while paying attention to specific aspects of a piece. i.e.)Mass, Palatte, Detail or Composition. I spent five minutes rushing through each this morning. Fun stuff!

Value Study

Doing some fundamental work right now. Back to the basics again until I get my bearings back.

Noob & Frag Comics

Here is my original comic strip creation Noob & Frag. It was a bi-monthly comic I did in addition to a newsletter at work. It was pretty fun doing it, and it always made me laugh while I was drawing them.
They are old, but still funny!
