Donatello 4 That Azz!!!

Still workin' on this Cintiq. Trying to experiment with new techniques and styles. I find I have been gravitating towards the o'l Comic style art lately. I found that inking with the Cintiq in Sketchbook Pro is pretty sweet. I figure I'll save millions of dollars on Bristol board, sketchbooks, pencils and ink in the long run. If I ever decide to go the,"All Digital" route. Looks like that is where I'm headed.

I finished this one this morning. Good o'l Donatello. This began as a little sketch I did while working at Convergys in Winnipeg. I scribbled it out and attempted to render it out, then some cock sucker supervisor decided to walk by and say," Hey! That doesn't look very productive. Should you be doing that?" Since I wasn't busy, I figured I'd draw, but I gave in and stopped, for a few seconds... I quit that job shortly after. It was pretty much a bullshit job, like all jobs that don't consist of you doing whatever you want to and getting paid for it. One day though! I just keep on truckin'!
Just Juiced up the saturation a bit on the skin to get rid of the dull feel on this one.

Now for the purpose of Blogographing, I will post my step by step process that was taken to achieve the final result. Just a basic comic book style with a painterly look. The comic style art is how I began and I seem to gravitate to it every now and then. So I guess I'm going to keep doing it until I get bored.
Enjoy!!!

Quick Sketch Post

I've been trying my best to get used to this new Cintiq. It really takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it. I was just screwing around with Sketchbook pro and Photoshop and whipped up this dumb sketch.
I just put the pen to the screen and scribbled this dumb thing. So I'm going to keep putting up crap until I get the hang of this damn thing!!!

Enjoy!

Quick 2 Minute Sketches

Just wanted to throw something up. Because I've been busy with Valentines Weekend, I didn't have time to do any painting or drawing. So here are a few quick 2 minute thumbnail sketches I did today. Some female anatomy and stupid rough stuff.

Enjoy!

Frustration leads to Success!

Just kept pluggin' away, and finally got past the block! I just discovered a wicked awesome blog today by these fellas from a company called CreatureBox . Awesome comic style work with amazing creativity! It inspired me to hit the paint immediatly! But I was side tracked by how smooth their line work was. I don't really enjoy line work in Photoshop, or Painter. One of their interviews, they indicated they used a program called Sketchbook Pro. I investigated it, then downloaded the software for my Mac. To my surprise, the program worked pretty sweet! I think it responds to my tablet better when sketching and inking. So I whipped together this piece. Just a quick sketch of that lovable character Borat. I kind of lost respect for him after that "Bruno" film. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff (If you know what I mean ;), but it disgusted me. I had to was my eye balls after seeing that crap!
Anyway, threw together this piece in Sketchbook pro and PSCS4.
Enjoy everyone!

Hitting a Painter's Mental Block

Just trying to get over this painter's block that I just hit yesterday. It seemed like everything I was painting was just wrong. I don't know why, but it's not hard to get over. You just gotta keep pushing on! Frustration leads to progression. That's what I've learned over the years.
Here is the piece I've been working on. Just threw on the flats and some effects over a background. Not much, but it kind of makes it look a little retro. Like the old cartoon.
Enjoy!

Scooby Doo!

Just taking a break from film studies to do some comic style art. Haven't done it this way for a while. I think I'll end up just painting this one though. THis is just a preview.
Enjoy!

Another Film Study

Woke up early today and started another film study. I am attempting to explore different brushes in Painter. I used the palette knife for this painting. Beginning to discover new possibilities with textures and strokes. I am interested in studying older films. I enjoy the grainy look and warm feel of the film.
Enjoy everyone!

Bad Dreams Environment 1 Hour Film Study

Here is another film study I did. Just an environment with a creepy house and a beat up old van.
Changed up my approach to this one. Blocked off all of the images as solid colors using the Polygonal lasso tool, and then painted them. I like the results.
Not much, so enjoy!

St. Patty's Day Early Design Concepts

I am working on a few design concepts for some St. Patrick's day shirt and/buttons to get printed and possibly sell. I know it's early, and I should be focused on Valentines day, but how could I resist! I was thinking about that stupid little guy from that Jimmy Dean's Breakfast commercial.
Sketched on paper and painted in Photoshop CS4.

Enjoy!!!

One Hour Film Studies

Recently I had the chance to speak with a wonderful artist by the name of Jeff Turley. Lately I have been at a stand still with my work. Mostly due to my work schedule and life in general. I have still been sketching and doing random stuff, but nothing to brag about. Mr. Turley introduced me to film studies. I know it may seem like a simple concept and I punched myself in the face for not discovering it earlier, but it is a wonderful new way to explore composition, color, temperature, values, proportion and all other components of what makes a good piece.
Each of the studies that I painted, were completed in exactly one hour. By deticating this amount of time to one piece allows you to focus on more than the main subject, but rather every component that makes up the scene. From the far background blurry images, to the middle ground images and then the foreground images. Every component begins to become just shapes and color blocks. I didn't focus on the small details until I had completed the majority of the piece.
From the bottom to the top, I was able to see a progression in each of the pieces. But I am going to continue to do these studies.

Enjoy!

G'day Hosers! Pt.3 WIP

Started working on this piece again this morning.
It took the back burner for a little while, and it was bothering me, so I got fired up and began to tackle it.
Trying to arrange the pieces in the most eye pleasing way possible.
I have a few other projects that I need to work on for Valentines day and St. Patrick's day. Got a book I'm illustrating too.
I'm gonna do some T-shirts for St.Patrick's day. I'll post the images and if anyone wants one, I'll ship em out!

Enjoy!!!

Luigi Portrait Study

I've been experimenting with a few new illustration techniques that I have derived from a few of my favorite artists. It seems to make coloring a little more easy and efficient.
I took the initial sketch I did of Luigi and started off with the whole Dick in a box gag. But upon further examination, I saw more. Luigi had a serious look on his face. It looked as though he didn't want that box covering up his balls. So I decided to take it out and render him alone. In a serious, painterly manner.
I think it turned out well. I'll probably print this one out and hang it up for a while.

Enjoy!!!

Wanna Give You Somethin' That's Been On My Mind!

I was at work yesterday, and just before I left, I came up with this funny idea for a new drawing. So I scribbled it out on a piece of scrap paper, so I wouldn't forget it, and ran home with it. Here's what I came up with.... I thought it was pretty funny, but it's wearing off, so enjoy!
By the way.... I'm with COCO!

Puppy Characture

I was so disappointed with my last coloring job, I decided to start painting a characture of my youngest puppy, Ava. She's about 8 months old now, but she's pretty crazy, and she will kill you. My oldest, Dafney, is pretty laid back in comparison. But she is a big barrel azz and kicks lil' Ava's azz sometimes. I didn't paint Dafney this time because she has a lot of different colors, kind of like a tiger. Ava is pretty cute, because she is so little, like a miniature Pitbull.
I threw this one together pretty quickly in Painter, about 15 minutes, with the smeary palette knife and oil brush. Painted from memory, with no reference.

Enjoy!

Mobbin' In My Old School!

Anyone who knows anything about me, knows I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Especially Raphael. I used to spend countless hours drawing them in my notebooks at school. I think I drew this one back in fourth grade. I was bored and decided to step back and get down to the basics of painting. I attempted to interpret the lines of the muscles that I drew. Being that I was so young, I had no sense of anatomy or proportion. I just drew what I wanted. I had fun doing it too. While I was painting this piece, I tried to keep my values down and tried to interpret the lighting the best I could in a short period of time.
I didn't set out to create a masterpiece, I just felt like scribbling out some color as fast as possible.
Drawn with pencil on lined paper. Colored entirely in Painter X.

Enjoy everyone!

A little Old School Appetizer to hold you over

While I'm working on my current piece, I think it would be nice to throw up some of my old stuff. These are a few illustrations from one of my comics. The Brain Monkey and Steve Urkle's Head.

Enjoy!

Take Off EH! You Hoser!

Aaah yes. I remember the days when these guys were on SCTV. I loved staying up late on weekdays to watch it. They were so dumb, yet so hilarious! When the movie came out, forget it! That was even better! I think those guys had a great impact on Canadian culture. Hell, people in America still think we wear parkas and toques all year round, and say EH after every sentence. I love it though.
I scribbled this out the other day, and did a quick color scheme. I plan on painting completely, and let me say, it will be a masterpiece!

Enjoy, EH!

Merry Christmas 2009!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to throw up this piece. Finished painting it this morning.
This year, Santa is focusing on just the naughty ones. Screw those nice suckas!

This will probably be my last painting of the year, since I have a shit load of Christmas shopping to do...

Enjoy!

Oh Snap!

Here is an update of my most recent painting. I tend to paint something and then spend too much time after it is completed, picking and prodding. But I figured by adding some whipped out snow under bear man's feet, would add to the drama of the piece. But in reality, this wasn't meant to be a masterpiece. Just a warmup painting for a contest. But I still love it. I use it as my desktop image now.

Just the other day, my girlfriend stumbled across my name on google, and next to it was an image of an old pastel portrait of 2pac. She brought it to my attention immediately. I then clicked the link that led me to the Photobucket website. Someone had setup a profile and was using my art as their own. Allowing people to download the image, order prints, make skins for your electronic devices and print on coffee mugs. I was disgusted, and wanted to take action immediately. I contacted a lawyer and explored my options. Seems that it would probably not be cost effective to take the legal route, so I contacted Photobucket's Abuse department. They just requested a bit of information, and had that image taken down within ten minutes.

Now, I normally watermark all of my work, except for some of my old pictures. But some friendly advice to all artists who display your work online, WATERMARK YOUR PICTURES!!! This will hopefully deter others from passing your work off as their own.

Anyway, ENJOY!

Does A Bear Shit In THe Woods?

Jeeze louise!!! It's about 6:30 AM right now... I think I'm turning into an insomniac!
I didn't win that contest the other night, but I'm going to keep trying! This time, the theme is "Falling". I came up with this Idea while I was at work. I finished it around 2:00 AM this morning, so I decided to post it up.
I made a few variations to throw a little extra humor into the image. But what's funnier than a bear who slips and is about to bust his azz?
I also threw up an edited version for those of you who don't enjoy Bear Nudity! ;)

Enjoy everyone!

Whoot Whoot! Finally Finished!!!

Whew!!! I was up till about six in the morning last night finishing this damn piece! The fur is what took the longest. I submitted it as soon as I finished it, not taking into consideration the minor touchups. We'll see by the end of the week if I even placed in the top three.
The topic was to draw or paint a pinup girl. I immediatly thought of that girl from the old My Pet Monster Cartoon. I think her name was Jill. Here is a detail of her.

Don't ask where the composition came from. I just scribbled it out and came up with this.

Here is the finished piece:

And a little monster

Quick Santa Sketch Fo' Dat Azz!!!

Here's a quick sketch I did a couple of days ago. I'll color it and put it on a Christmas card or something.
That fat azz bastard!!!

Enjoy!!!

Triple Crazy Closeup!!!

Here is some of the painstaking detail I've put into this piece. HOpefully I'll have it finished today. I hope to enter the Chiustream art contest for the "Pinup Girl" by Bill Presing. I've never entered a contest before, but it should be pretty fun!
Wish me luck!!!

Distracted for a good reason!

I love my niece, so I found it fitting to just paint a portrait of her to touch up on tha skillz. She's over 3 now, and this was taken when she was about 4 months old, but I thought it was a cute picture.
She has a sister who was just born about a month ago, and I will paint her too. She just needs to get a little older for her to develop some features.

Painted entirely in Painter X.

Enjoy!

Funny as hell!

Long ago, when I started working for a large cable company, I met this idiot named Lorenzo. He was a nice fellow, and out of the kindness of my heart, I carpooled with him every day to help him out. Over time, he began taking advantage of my kindness by requesting that I go out of my way to pick him up for work, when he was never ready on time. Later on that year, I found out that he was on double secret probation with the company. Seems that he was habitually tardy, and was lookin' to drag me down with him. Soon after I found this out, he was fired. That made me extremely happy! Before he got fired, I didn't pick him up for work and he called me and screamed out, "YA GOT ME FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRED!!! WHAT AM I GONNA DOOOOOOOOOO!" It was hilarious! So as his going away present, I drew him a picture and pinned it on his computer before he was escorted out of the building.
I colored it to add to the hilariousness!

Enjoy!

Done with Beets, Bears and this Fool!

Finally! After months of putting it off, I've finally finished this damn painting!
I figured, to hell what the final piece looks like, I have been procrastinating this shit for too long!
I think it turned out nicely. It is a lot more fun when you don't let your inhibitions get in the way of you passion for art.
Painted entirely in Painter 9 and 10.

Enjoy all!

P.S.: I had to throw in a BEET!

Thank Goodness Wedding Season is Over!!!

My girlfriend has kept me busy these past few months. We figured, instead of giving her friends regular gifts like coffee makers and glassware, we can just paint them a wedding portrait as a gift.
I love painting portraits, especially if it is a gift and I have creative control of the composition.
Over all, I think they both turned out pretty nicely.

Enjoy!!

Rainberry Britecakes!

Here is a piece I created a few months ago. I used a different coloring technique with this one. I basically used pen tool selections and the paint brush. I included the sketch and the finished piece.
When I was finished, I kinda got the idea that this could be a combination or Rainbow Bright and Strawberry Shortcake, all rolled into one.
Enjoy!

Dog Inspired World

Just a quick paint sketch I did in Photoshop. Trying out a lot of new brush setting techniques. I like the painterly look, rather than the smooth airbrush look.
Enjoy!
