Cartooner Love

No matter what I do, I can never stop drawing cartoons! Back when I was in 8th grade, my teacher Mrs. Miller, gave everyone in the class awards based on their natural abilities. I was awarded the, "Cartoonist" award. I was honored, and in addition to that, I was offered the chance to attend art classes in the summer, which were coincidentally taught by my 5th grade teacher Mr. Barth. The art class taught me to expand my creative abilities by creating art with several different mediums, forcing me to go outside my comfort zone.
I will be forever grateful to Mrs. Miller for that gift!

This piece is dedicated to her, for whatever it's worth...

I was inspired by an old Simpsons episode, where Homer was leaving work in a Fred Flintstone fashion. I thought it was hilarious, so this quote came to mind, for all those who remember.
I sketched this piece out while I was at work a few years ago. The colors and inks were laid down in PS CS4.

Enjoy!

Retro Junkie I B

Back when I attended the University Of Manitoba, in my freshman year, I had taken a few intro to art courses. In one of the courses, I don't remember the assignment, but I felt compelled to dig into my cartoon roots and resurrect Fat Albert.
At the time, I was really into comic books and cartoons, but I had no painting skills and my perspective skills were lacking. But I managed to put together this piece.
I gave the piece to my little brother, so my niece can now enjoy it.
But lately, I have been painting over my old work, rather than painting any new and original works. At this point, I'll paint anything just to get the practice.
So her is a painted over Mush Mouth. I used Photoshop CS3 for this piece. I was using a different coloring technique using screen layers for the highlights.
Enjoy!

Beets Beats A Bear?

I have still been touching up on my skills lately. Although it hasn't been as frequently as I planned. I am working on a piece, in honor of the show,"The Office". One of my favorite characters, Dwight, seems to be the goofiest. So I figured I'd paint him. But I think I'll paint the whole cast. I've been using Painter X for the majority of this piece. Using the Round Oil brush, which gives the piece a more painterly feel.
I am including the steps for this process.
So if you have any questions, just email me.
Enjoy!

Been A Long Time!

I've been neglecting my blog for all the wrong reasons. I haven't been painting as much as I would like to. You know, life seems to get in the way most of the time. So her goes a few pieces I've worked on. The first is a cell from my comic, Noob & Frag Issue 6. I've been jumping back and forth between Painter X and PS CS3. But for this one, I was experimenting with a new painting style. It was completed in about 2 hours entirely in Painter X. Screwing around with tones and values, I've learned a lot.
The second is an old sketch from about 7 years ago. I decided to paint it entirely in PS CS3 using the airbrush. I added a bit of texture to the clothing. I spent about 4 hours on it, and I'm not very happy how it turned out. I kinda just guessed the lighting.
I am making a promise to submit more work whenever possible. So check me out!

Flippin' Sweet Napoleon Dynamite

Finally got around to painting again! It's hard to keep the momentum when your regular job gets in the way.
I decided to practice by painting an old sketch I drew from memory back in '04 of Napoleon Dynamite. I drew it in stylized from what I could remember of the idiot.
Hopefully I can keep the momentum going!
Painted in PSCS3 from memory.

Enjoy!

Mr. President O-b-a-b-a-bama!

I haven't practiced any life drawing for months, so I decided yesterday that I would do a painting of good o'l President Obama. My pops loves Mr. Obama. He came down from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Fargo, ND to see him during the election. I haven't seen my folks for a while, so I think I'll bring them this painting. I painted it from a photograph I found on Google in Painter and Photoshop. I am pretty happy with the results.

TERROR BEAR!!!

From the pit of the deepest darkest corner of my memory, comes this image of my Terror Bear. This character was derived from a nightmare that I experienced on a constant basis as a child. It all began when I was two years old. My parents knew how much I loved the old Showbiz Pizza, so they took me there for my 2nd birthday. As a baby I was terrified of Billy Bob Brockali and all of the Rock Afire Explosion. But as long as they stayed away from me, I was ok. But when that bastard bear got close enough to bring me my birthday cake, I freaked out, as do most babies when confronted with a gigantic bear wearing overalls. I remember once Billy Bob was on stage, I gathered the nerve to go up to the stage and cheer on the Rock Afire Explosion. That Fatz Geronimo could sure hit those keys. But when I got closer to the stage, I noticed that there was a tree stump and climbed up to take a closer look. To my surprise, popped out the most terrifying thing I had ever seen, that little bastard Choo-Choo! He came at me with no hesitation and knocked me on my ass. I know that I was two years old, but that furry little bastard's red eyes would be engraved into my memory forever.
Once I was old enough to write stories, in grade 3, I began pumping out a series of short stories based on that damn bear. They were titled, "The Tickle Teddy Bear!" Only the bear that I remember, haunted my dreams and would not stop until I was dead. He would wait under my bed until I was asleep, the BAM! He would jump on my stomach until I was dead, only I was too fast for him to catch.
I had nightmares about that little bastard until about grade 9, but he still lingers in my memory, and will continue to do so forever...

This painting is of a drawing that I created about five years ago.

Please enjoy... but don't let him get to you toooooooooooooo! ;)

My First Blog

Well, this is my first blog ever.  I have had the privlege of viewing several amazing blogs that display such wonderful art, so I felt that I must add my work to the mix.  I do enjoy any type of feedback from anyone, so this feels like the perfect opportunity to mingle with everyone.
So I am adding one of my very first digital paintings to this blog post.  I am normally specialize in traditional mediums such as Oil and Acrylic paints, but I have come to enjoy digital painting.  You have all the freedom in the world to express your strokes, without the fear of wasting a canvas or a piece of paper, in hopes of creating a masterpiece.  Although I do still use the old fashioned, trustworthy pencil most of the time.
This first piece is called "Stripper Tipp".  It is of a sketch that I created several years ago, while I was bored at work.  Love to study the female figure...;)  So what better way to express it than through a painting.  I used Painter IX and Photoshop in this piece.
So I do hope you folks enjoy my piece, and the many other pieces I plan to post!

Peace!  We outta here!
